The Reason the Volume is Grayed Out
The reason why the volume button is greyed out and locked on mute is that there’s a problem within your random-access memory parameter. Since these settings store information about your volume, if there’s a problem within these settings, it causes your volume to stay on Mute.

1. Reboot your Mac.
2. As soon as you hear the chime, hold down Command + Option + P + R. The next time you hear the boot chime, the PRAM should be reset.
3. Wait for the Mac to boot up.
4. Update your Mac. After you’ve reset your PRAM, you can check if you’re able to change your volume.
2. Reset MVRAM
After you’ve reset your PRAM, if your volume is still locked, you’ll need to reset your NVRAM. Your SMC is a small memory that your Mac uses to store certain settings. Resetting the NVRAM can help fix problems with your volume settings.
1. Shut down your Mac. Locate Hold Command (⌘), Option, P, and R and be ready to hold them.
2. Turn on your Mac.
3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys once you hear the startup sound.
4. Hold these keys your Mac restarts and you hear the startup sound again. Check if your WIFI is working and if the error message has gone.
3. Reset Core Audio
Core audio is a low-level API that deals with sound on your Mac. Resetting it can help fix the volume problem on your Mac.
To Reset Core Audio:
1. Launch the Terminal.
2. Enter the command sudo killall coreaudiod
3. Press Enter. After you’ve run the command, you can check if you’re able to adjust your volume from mute.
4. Repair Drive

To repair the drive:
1. Turn off your Mac.
2. Hold both Command + R when turning on your Mac. This will start it up in recovery mode.

5. Install Software Updates
If you have updates that haven’t been installed yet, installing them might fix the issue with your volume. If your software is out of date, there may be a problem in your software that’s causing the volume button to gray out.
You’ll first need to install any software updates on your Mac. Once they’re installed, you’ll need to safe reboot your mac. To start up in safe mode: Restart your Mac > then immediately press and hold the Shift key.
